All of these word problems involve variables.  Students are given a simple scenario with an unknown quantity, and asked to choose a variable to represent the unknown, to write an equation, and then solve for the unknown.  The computations and problems are simple and without superfluous data; the intent is to give students practice in creating variables to represent unknowns.
