You Can Make A Difference to Protect your Child’s Privacy Online

Today’s post is brought to you courtesy of Common Sense Media.  At K5 we’re big fans of their work and we have referenced their research on kids’ use of technology on this blog.

Now they’re calling for our signatures on a petition to support a policy that involves our kids’ online and mobile privacy.

Common Sense online privacy

A little background. The FTC’s Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act or COPPA passed with bipartisan support in 1998.  The Act is in place to ensure parents remain the key decision-maker in how their children’s information can be collected, shared or sold online.  These protections have not kept pace with rapidly changing technology.

The proposed updates would extend COPPA and its core principles to cover new online and mobile technologies.  In order to get there, though, we parents need to step up.  In an email to us, Common Sense pointed us to an online petition to bring to your attention.  Signatures will go a long way to pushing this new legislation to ensure our kids’ privacy is protected.  If you feel as strongly about your child’s online privacy as we do, please take a moment and sign this petition.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

Common Sense also has a page with tips on protecting your kids’ privacy online and via mobile at www.commonsense.org/privacy
