Themed Kits for Learning to Read

Are you looking for new ways to engage your kid in reading?  Do you need a fresh approach to teaching your child to read?  Here are some free literacy kits we came across on the Reading Rockets web site.  Combining reading and activities around a central theme is a fun way to engage kids in learning to read.

Categorized by theme, of which there are 18, each literacy bag contains:

  • A parent information sheet with instructions on how to use the packet and some tips for reading with your child.

  • Two books: one fiction and one non-fiction that you’ll have to order.

  • Activities: creative: a hands-on craft project, imagination: play, writing or drawing, and a real-world experience activity.

  • And a bookmark

Let’s dig a little deeper into one of the themed literacy bags – environment.

Clicking on the link to the environment literacy bag brings up this page – where you can download the instructions and activities as a pdf file and order the two books from Amazon (links provided for each book) if you don’t already have them.

For this kit, the pdf is 9 pages, with a very good introduction with suggestions on how to use the kit and the books.  It starts with a section for teachers and librarians for putting the kit together for groups.  For parents doing this on their own with their kids, though, it’s worth reading through this section too.  Further down, on page 3, are further instructions for parents on how best to use the kit.

You’ll have hours of fun reading the books and doing the activities.
