Schools are increasing the use of nonfiction as part of their reading programs. Here’s an engaging range of nonfiction about a wide variety of subjects.
The Great Kite Book
THE GREAT KITE BOOK, by Norman Schmidt is a stunningly attractive informational book about kites. It includes a history of these flying creations, as well as carefully drawn patterns and photos of handmade kites against brilliant blue skies. Children (ages ten and up) will want to make their own kites using the clear instructions provided. They will find 19 different designs – from bumble bees to bald eagles—to choose from in this unusual book.
Cool Crocheting for Kids
COOL CROCHETING FOR KIDS by Alex Kuskowski is a good introduction to the fiber art of crocheting. This book begins with the basics (tools of the trade, holding the hook, etc.) and ends with several simple projects (crochet a-card, make a pom-pom hat, etc.). Although the book is well designed, most children in third grade on up would need the assistance of an adult who knows how to crochet to help in the learning process.
Crafts to Make in the Fall
CRAFTS TO MAKE IN THE FALL by Kathy Ross and illustrated by Vicky Enright is a collection of easy and fun craft ideas that will delight second and third grade kids and help parents who are looking for activities that do not involve screen time. Adults will need to be on hand to collect materials and to offer some minor assistance.
My First Cat
MY FIRST CAT by Linda Bozzo is published in association with the American Humane Society and does not mention purebred cats at all. It’s written in simple, direct language that should be easy for many first and second graders to read. The illustrations are photographs of lovable kids and adorable felines. This is an excellent book for any family with young children, especially if they are planning on adopting a kitten or cat.
Pumpkin Harvest
PUMPKIN HARVEST by Calvin Harris is a large-sized book filled with the intense colors of pumpkins and fall. The photo illustrations focus on one feature of fall for each double-page spread. Simple descriptive text in large font explain each photograph. This book is perfect for kindergarteners and first graders who are looking forward to picking a pumpkin, eating pumpkin pie, making a scarecrow, or making a Jack-o-lantern.
