In grade 4 and grade 5, students work on prepositions and prepositional phrases. Using the correct preposition is important as prepositions can change the meaning of a sentence.
What are prepositions?
Prepositions tell you where something is (in, between, next to) or when something happened (during, until, since).
Prepositions often tell us where one noun is in relation to another.
Types of prepositions
The are eight types of prepositions:
Time: at, on, in, before, during, after, etc.
Place: on, at or in at the most common prepositions of place.
Movement: to is the most common preposition of movement.
Manner: these prepositions describe the way things happen, such as by, in, like, with, on.
Agent or instrument: these prepositions indicate action conducted on something or someone, such as by, with.
Measure: these prepositions indicate the quantity of something or someone, such as by, of.
Source: these prepositions indicate that something or someone originated from something or someone, such as from, by.
Possession: these prepositions indicate ownership, such as of, with, to.
