Both pages cover addition, subtraction and mixed math word problems, as well as time, money and measurement word problems.
Let’s take a look at this grade 2 mixed addition and subtraction word problem, for example.
The school has three lost and found boxes, one of each floor of the building. They are cleaned out every month and the items with no names on them are donated to charity.
In the first box, there are 5 winter hats. In the second box, there are 4 more hats than in the first box. In the third box, there are 3 less hats than in the second box. How many hats are there in the third box?
Illustrated, the problem looks like this:
Let’s do this in two parts. In order to find out what is in box 3, we need to find out what's in box 2 first.
There are 4 more hats in the second box than in the first. So that means 5 + 4 = 9. There are 9 hats in the second box.
There are 3 less hats in the third box than in the second box. So that means 9 – 3 = 6.
The answer is: there are six hats in the third box.
