How to Multiply Proper Fractions

Proper fractions are fractions where the numerators are less than the denominators. For example, 3/5 or 4/7.

When multiplying fractions, you apply the following rule:

1.    Multiply the top numbers – the numerators

2.    Multiply the bottom numbers – the denominators

The answer is 4/15.

Sometimes, you can simplify the resulting fraction. Simplifying – or reducing – a fraction means to make that fraction as simple as possible. Why say 2/4, when you can say 1/2?
